Dj Rush was always one of the artists that was really inspiring me when I first started trying to write my own music. Off-kilter, wacky, way out, with a big (6′6″) Stage presence, he could even be considered as the Godfather of so-called “wonky techno”. For me, back around 1997, that was the appeal for me, trax that were so swung and out there that it almost sounded like the record was out of time with itself, particularly displayed in this mix with track 33 “You’ll Catch On” taken from his 1999 release on Djax-Up-Beats which was aptly named “Swingin’ the drums”- Yes, it’s not one of my bum mixes, the track is SUPPOSED to sound like that!
Over 2 hours, the wide variety of Rush’s styles are displayed, Chicago house, Jack Tracks, Disco Techno and straight up Banging stuff are all here. Rush is often easily dismissed, with people saying “oh, that’s just Schranz”, and whilst in recent years he has often gravitated towards the harder stuff, it’s easy to overlook the fact that many of his early works were highly influential, and always full of character and showmanship, which is often lacking in electronic music..

So here’s my celebration of Isiah Major’s contribution to my musical life, which has often had me bouncing around a dancefloor to the beat!

Bit late this week as everything has been a bit too full on for me to do a set and also I was feeling a bit uninspired and felt I needed a break.. So Norman, who cut his teeth at the legendary Stammheim Club in Kassel, Germany sent over his set from the same party where I played a couple of months back.. There’s no tracklist, just quality techno sounds, as ever, from Norman – you can find out more about Norman and his music here:

Si Begg has had a heavy influence on the electronic scene for well over a decade now. A sampling and sound design pioneer, Begg’s contributions started with his collaborations with Cristian Vogel, firstly as part of the Cassette tape based “Cabbage Head Collective” and then as “Inevitech”, after which he went on to make genre-fusing productions under a multitude of monikers. He founded Mosquito Records with Vogel, then towards the end of the nineties established Noodles: The stupidest recording organisation in the world – which in turn led on to the creation of sublabels Noodles Discotheque, Noodles Research, and Noodles Institute of Technology. Moving on from the music world, I last saw him in a club in London saying something about “Taking over the BBC from the inside with Cursor Miner”- How true that has turned out to be, I can’t say, although the last time I heard a Judge Jules jingle on Radio One, it seemed to have a bit of that Begg magic there.

Here are 36 of my personal favourites both from Mr Begg himself and his labels, put together into a 2 hour megamix..

Apologies for the late arrival of this weeks Signals- had some big problems with my internet connection at home and also preparing to move servers, so had more to do than time to do it in.

Here is a recording of the preparations for the gig in Kassel- I’ll warn you now, this is raw as hell and very much on the experimental side. Spandex sent me some self sequencing perpetual techno machines for the G1 nord modular, some of which I butchered, and was also inspired by to create some of my own. The experience has definitely made me think more about sequencing using random elements, and break away from more traditional sequencing methods. I’m still waiting to get the recordings back from the Kassel party, which I think will sound better as I had the crowd to vibe off of, and also I used 2 MPCs as appose to just the one here, a few more drums to fill up the gaps and give it some more punch. So, as I say, don’t expect this set to be seamless or slick – it’s a raw jam, but I do believe there are some good moments in there.. So download and enjoy. Oh, an props to Spandex for getting the ball rolling somewhat..

Cutting his teeth on the midlands free party scene, particularly with renegade sound warriors BWPT, JE:5 is another piece in the puzzle of the so-called wonky/brighton/no skool scene which became prevalent in the Uk in the mid ’90s. Watching him write whole live sets on the eve of a club event, whilst the sound crew were setting up was inspiring to say the least, and in the studio, his talents have often gone unsung. On vinyl, JE:5 has previously contributed a track to an e.p. for Deluxe Curl records, a remix of Michael Forshaw’s “Dumb”, and more recently has formed one half of a collaboration with myself, as seen on Relax 2009 “Absurdly Connected Machines”.

This week on Signals From Southwark, JE:5 takes us back to the old times with this great selection of classic trax, bringing back many memories of fields in the countryside or big dirty warehouses.
